Halloween saw a team of sixty U11 and U13 athletes from the Club, and at least the same number of supporters, make the annual trip to Lee Valley Athletics Centre for the Tom Pink Relays. This years’ invitational competition saw teams from across Surrey, Sussex, Essex, Herts and London at the event which see’s field events revolving around relay races throughout the afternoon. It turned into a hugely successful day for Vale with 24 medals returning home with the team.
The U11 Boys (Oliver Clegg, Quinlan Bartlett, Jack Pearce, Corben Atterbury & Logan Davies) paved the way in the 1000m relay winning their heat with ease before providing a display of baton changeovers in winning the final that had the event commentator full of praise for them. Not content with gold in this event, they followed this up with silver in the hurdles relay final.
Not to be out done, the girls U11 relay team (Isabella Bartlett, Kate Abrams, Emilia Rock, Aimee Taylor & Vicky Yates) qualified for the same two finals, winning both of their heats, before taking home Silver medals in the 1000m & bronze in the Hurdles finals.
In field events Jack Pearce took gold in the Javelin to add to his relay medals; Nathaniel Arulandam silver in the Long Jump; Lloyd Pinnock silver in Highland Step; Raf Bettison bronze in Weight for Distance while Joel Hansen & Corben Atterbury tied for bronze in the Long Jump and Corben also took bronze in Triple Jump. Again the girls performed just as well with Keri Armitage winning gold Tossing the Caber with a near perfect score, Grace Terrelonge winning gold in Triple Jump while Sophie Fines-Allin won bronze; Emilia Rock silver in the Long Jump and Kate Abrams bronze in Javelin. In total Vale’s U11 athletes went home with a haul of 16 medals, while a number of other athletes missed out narrowly on medals in both relays and field events with some great performances.
The U13’s also saw success both on the track and in the field. The Girls 1500m relay team (Lucy Perkins, Hannah Mabey, Carmen Williams, Kira Dale & Ashleigh Sidney) won bronze in a competitive final, while Carmen also won gold in the Long Jump. Lashayah Byfield won gold in Weight for Distance and followed that up with silver in Weight for Height. For the boys, the 1500m relay team (Sean Morrell, William Ratcliffe, Curtis Brown, Callum Neary & Aaron Taylor) took bronze following a tight finish which saw Curtis catch and outdip the runner in front of him on the finish line. The boys 3x500m Team (Ted McQuade, Willam Ratcliffe and Harry Stewart) also took bronze in their final. In the field it was the Callum Neary show; he who won gold in the Long Jump and silver in the Triple Jump.
This was a fantastic day of competition which was thoroughly enjoyed by competitors and spectators alike. It was really pleasing for coaches to see encouraging performances from some of Vale’s younger athletes suggesting that next years’ event can be just as successful. A big thank you from athletes and parents to Pat Card for organising what has become a favourite day on the Junior Section calendar, and thank you to Paul for a wonderful report.
