Ladies Southern League Team

The Club had a Ladies Team for years and it folded a few years ago. Thanks to Heather, Julia and Pat, our new joint Team Managers, we are starting a new Ladies Southern League Team from next year. This new Team will provided much needed competition for our Senior Ladies.

If there are any Senior Ladies who are at University who would like to compete for us then I am sure we could come to some arrangement regarding travelling expenses.

If any parents would like to compete preferably Mums then i am sure our hard working Membership Secretary Pat Card would be only to pleased to adjust their memberships to family members.

We need a big turn out from all of our Senior Ladies at these League matches next year.

Come on Ladies. If our Senior Men can win their League then so can you.

Anurahda Cooray presenting cheque to Chilterns MS Centre

Anuradha Cooray, on behalf of the club, gives Mark Dewey a cheque for one thousand pounds. The money was approximately half the profit made from the Coombe Hill race this year. The rest of the money will be retained by the club to pay for coaching, equipment etc.

The charity, Chilterns MS Centre, is a drop in centre for people with multiple sclerosis where they are encouraged to seek help and to help themselves. More information at www.chilternsmscentre.org

LAURA McGAWN - good to see former memeber Laura Mcgawn is still performing well.Laura who is the club record holder in several events triumphed at the Inter Services Athletics finals held at Tidworth on 22nd July. Competing for the Army she won the triple jump with 11.15m and recorded an excellent win in the javelin with a throw of 40.53m

THE MILE - It is noticeable from looking at the track and field club records that there are very few performances recorded for the mile. This is surprising as it was a regularly run event in the 50s and 60s. I wondered if any of the older members have any deatils of VOAAC athletes competing in mile races, so that i can fill in some of the gaps in the club records?

Andy Stephenson, 11th Aug 2009

Many congratulations to our Men's Southern League Team for winning their League Division Three Title and also gaining Promotion to Division Two.

Special thanks must go to Mark Fallaize and Dan Barber our Joint Team Captains who have done a superb job in what has been their first year in Team Management.

A big thank you must also go to the squads Coaches and Officials for their support throughout the Season. Come on you Vale.

Club BBQ

VOAAC BBQ Wendover Woods

The 1st social BBQ for the club was a great success with the sun coming out and a large number of athletes and their families turning up. Lots of food, friends and football made the day a fantastic one, minus the nettle stings of course but that couldn't be helped with the dodgy football pitch and competitive nature of some of our 'older' members! We hope to have another BBQ equally as successful at the end of summer, with even more of our members turning up. So make sure that next time you get your tickets in early and fingers crossed the weather is just as great.

Coombe Hill Run 2009

It was one of the highest turnouts for this "fell" race that takes in the climb up to the Coombe Hill monument before the decent back towards the Shoulder and Mutton pub in Wendover. Thanks goes to race organiser Nick Taylor and his team who made this yet another succesful Club event.

Race for Life, Waddesdon, 2009

In my capacity as the Athletic Club's Waddesdon Manor RFL Co-ordinator, I would like to thank all the Club's volunteers who assisted with setting up the 5K course, marshalling the course, managing the Road Closure and managing the parking arrangements for the event's volunteers and 3,000+ participants.

The event was again an absolutely tremendous success and it is envisaged that well over £200K in sponsorship monies will be raised from this event alone, all of which will be specifically invested in cancer research.

Nick Wright, Cancer Research's Area Events Manager, has asked me to pass on his sincere appreciation for the Athletic Club's invaluable support of this superb event over the last 8 years.

Mens Team Building Evening

Mens Team Building Event, April 2009

There was a good turnout at the men’s team building evening on Friday, with the club’s sprint group well represented, however, slightly disappointingly there was not such a good attendance from the club’s distance athletes or field eventers. The Beijing PS3 Decathlon competition was won by sprinters Jeff Bond and Harvey Jones and middle distance runner Mark Fallaize, with the trio of distance athlete Gaith Taha and Dan Barber and Ejay Williams from the sprint group filling the runners up spot. Notable highlights from the evening came from Peter Hoare in the Pole Vault and Gaith in the High Jump, as well as Jermaine Blake’s disqualification for two false starts in the 100m – none of that at the first men’s match please Jermaine! Thanks to everyone who attended and for all the positive feedback, due to the success of the evening there is the possibility of another evening to follow so watch this space.

London Marathon 26th April

The Vale will have a bakers dozen in Sunday’s Flora London Marathon.

Anuradha Cooray will lead the Vale runners on the AAA start hoping to get the 2 hour 18 minutes qualifying time for the World championship marathon in Berlin later this year. His recent form should see him break the long standing Club record and if he achieves his aim it will be by some margin.

Reece Street will join him together with Colin Steptoe who will be aiming to continue his achievement of winning yet another AAA age category medal. If Colin achieves another sub 2.45 marathon he will be able to join the club elite when 60 next year.

Frank Rooney will be running his second London and will be aiming for the 3 hour mark and he will be followed by a quartet of veterans aiming to break 3.15 and achieve a good for age time for next years race.

Alan Roberts will be running his 25th consecutive London, with Ian Thompson, Mick O’Connor and Danny Wizard all vying to be the best of this group. If Roger Kirk breaks 3 hours 45 mins then the over 60 record could get broken.

Of the ladies, Liz Tapper will be favourite and is not far off the club record but she will need to break 3 hours to achieve it. Charlotte Steptoe will not be far behind and Sophie Delderfield will make up the Vale ladies trio.

Not a marathon runner but a sprinter, Jermaine Blake will be aiming to get round and raise money for his charity Rainbow Trust. If it comes down to a sprint finish then his 11.3 secs 100m will be a match for most…

Coombe Hill Race Sunday 7th June 11am Start

After last years race the Race Directer for the past fifteen years Richard Draffen retired. We must say a big thank you to Richard for his all of his hard work towards the race over the years.

Richard approached the our club and asked us if we were interested in taking over the Coombe Hill race organisation. Our Executive Committee all agreed to this.We did not want to see a good local race close down and also we looked upon it as a race with lots of potential.

Nick Taylor has been appointed as the new Coombe Hill Race Director so it will be in good hands. Nick has got some super ideas to improve the race and also to make it safer.

A website is also being designed and it will be linked with our own club Website. Nick will require a team of helpers on the day to perform various duties so if you are available please see him on training nights.

On a personal note i am pleased that our club has taken over this Race as i ran for the Vale in the first ever Coombe Hill Race back in the early seventies finishing fourth (First Vale runner home) and the Vale won the team event.
