1st May, Hemel Hempstead: Track & Field Men's team start season with an exciting win
After securing promotion last year from Division 3 to Division 2 of the Southern Men's League, VOA's Track & Field team made a clear point that they are coming to clinch one of the top 5 places to secure promotion to Division 1 in the next season.
The Vale had a steady start to the day picking up 2nd, 3rd and 4th places in a variety of events being 3rd after 5 events had passed and rising to 2nd place into the middle of the meeting.
However, A and B string wins in the 800m (courtesy of the Gurton brothers, Will and Dan), 5km (from Anuradha Cooray and Declan Hamblin), 1500m (Tom Atkins and Will Gurton) and an A-string victory from Dwayne Stoddart in the 110mh helped to put The Vale within touching distance of 1st place on the day.
The end with the 4x400m event was absolutely electric. Charlie May and Mark Richards put us in the front again with 2 points after brave performances in the 3000m steeplechase. That meant that we had to keep this advantage by finishing in front of Stevenage or no more than one position behind them. With such charged atmospheres, The Gurtons, Jeff Bond and Dan Barber spared no effort and positioned themselves on the heels of Stevenage runners to deliver the first win of the season and to keep a clean sheet.
Thanks for everybody who turned up and contributed to having a full lineup. As you have seen, the match was won with 1 point (120 for VOA to 119 for Stevenage). So keep the momentum going! The team will be traveling to Perivale (Ealing) for the next match and will be facing tough competitors, two of whom have won their first matches (Herts Phoenix & St Marys Richmond) and the remaining two (Herne Hill Harriers & Ealing) scoring respectable 121 and 92.5 points respectively.
