170 Junior athletes descended on Watford Athletic Club on Sunday 11 June for the 2nd Junior Open Meeting of the season, this included a team of 12 from Vale of Aylesbury Kestrels representing the club in both the under 9 & under 11 categories.
The girls team lead by regulars Lucy Cuthbert and Ffion Mabey put in some great performances. Lucy set the 3rd fastest time of the day over 600m with 2.08:40 and followed this up with 3rd in her 80m heat (13.7) and 19th in Long Jump (2.82). Ffion won her 80m heat in the 3rd fastest time of the day (12.7), finished 4th overall in Long Jump with a PB leap of 3.26m while also setting the 9th fastest 600m of the day (2.18:30). Harriet Squire continued her good performances by finishing 1st in u11 Girls Chest Push (5.25m), while also finishing 5th in her 80m heat (15.2) and 24th in Long Jump (2.41). Finishing the u11 girls entries on competition debut was Olivia London. Olivia was not worried by the size of her first competition finishing an excellent 8th in her first competitive Long Jump with a very promising leap of 3.16m. She followed this up with 4th in her 80m heat (13.4) and 14th in 600m (2.22:20).
In the under 9 section, the next generation of Cuthbert’s, Rachael, showed whatever her sisters can do….by finishing 6th in 400m (1:43.40), 12th in Long Jump with 2.15m and 5th in her 75m heat with 16.2.
The boys team was a mix of experience and first time athletes, but they all made an impression on the competition. The Spittles Boys (Luke & Olly) led the way. Luke continued his good form winning his 80m heat (12.5), setting the 8th fastest time over 600m (2.11:50) and finishing 13th in Long Jump (2.74m). Oliver meanwhile continued his ever improving performances with 3rd in his 80m heat (14.7), 8th in his 600m heat (2.22:80) and 22nd in Long Jump (2.50). Leo Tottle, who did a great job with the new athletes throughout the day, finished an excellent 5th overall in Chest Push (5.50m) and 17th in Long Jump (2.50). These two were joined by newcomer Elliot Corke. Elliot started his athletics career by winning his 80m heat (13.3) finishing a very good 4th in 600m (2.12:50) and 16th in Long Jump (2.66).
In the under 9 section, Raphie London won the 400m with a rapid 1.14:60, breaking the senior athlete pacer in the process and also won the 75m in 12.1. Raphie was chased home in both the 400m and 75m by Kris Toft who finished 2nd overall to Raphie in both events with two great runs. Rhys Thomas completed the team and put in 2 strong performances finishing 6th in Long Jump (2.61) and 5th in 75m (13.8). A great start for all 3 in competition.
