History of the Competition / Further Information

With nearly 900 athletes taking part across all age ranges, the Chiltern League is England’s largest cross country competition, bringing together clubs from;

  • Bedfordshire
  • Berkshire
  • Buckinghamshire
  • Hertfordshire
  • Middlesex
  • Northamptonshire
  • Oxfordshire

The league runs 5 “mob matches” per winter season with 2 large divisions competing in the same races.

There are 14 clubs in Division 1 and 19 clubs in Division 2.

For many of years Vale of Aylesbury AC has competed in Division 1 against the very best running clubs in our region, including Bedford and County, Marshall Milton Keynes, Chiltern Harriers, Harrow AC, Windsor SE&H, Luton AC, Headington, Watford and St. Albans.

Race distances range from 2k for under-11 boys and girls to 5-6k for senior ladies and 8-10k for senior men. The Club urges all runners over the age of 9 in the August preceding the season to participate because big teams are needed to score – the top 10 runners score for the senior men, top 4 or 3 for other races, with prizes for veteran teams as well.

The courses are varied and conditions can be challenging. The league mixes relatively quick park-like venues at Watford, Slough and Luton with muddy slog-fests at Oxford. Vale finishing in 9th position overall in 2014/15 season and an impressive 4th in the U13 boy’s category with Max Perry winning every U13 boys race.

Participation in Chiltern League prepares Vale athletes for the annual Inter-County (Bucks/Berks) Cross Country Championship as well as the South of England AA Cross Country Championships. Entry to all these races is free to Club members. Cross country builds both physical and mental strength along with endurance and acts as an important counter-balance to track and road training/racing.

Club vests must be worn by all age groups when competing for the Club in the Chiltern League.
