Upper Age Group YDL – Match one: Stevenage – Sunday 28th April 2019
So… the first upper age group YDL at Stevenage was a fantastic start to the season. With only a small team we achieved an amazing 2nd place out of 7 teams! We had lots of athletes matching their PB’s and some getting new PB’s which shows winter training has gone well.
All athletes put in a sterling effort. With a debut performance from Anna Cuthbert in the Steeplechase and great team efforts in the relays. With so many excellent performances it’s hard to name them all but my favourite moment of the day has to be the last race where at the very last minute Elena, Isabella, Anna & Emily decided to put themselves in for the u20 4 x 400m relay and showed great team spirit! Well done also to Lucy who despite having a bad fall across the finish line in 100m then went onto still compete in the Long Jump and did very well (hope the knees are OK Lucy?). Finally, thank you to all the athletes who moved up in age category and competed in the u20 age group despite only being an u17!! Although usually in athletics you are competing as an individual, the YDL’s are all about team efforts.
Well done to our athletes who took part in events they hadn’t done before or even train to do, but despite being anxious about having a go they may not have thrown or jumped a PB, or won, but they enjoyed taking part in the end and in doing so showed team spirit!
If anyone is apprehensive about competing at these matches we urge you to have a go! There is always a broad range of abilities and you may well surprise yourself. Let Pat know your availability for the next one on 26th May and join us at Perivale! We were very short on middle distance runners, we had no one in either men or women’s high jump and need more people in general across all events.
If you have any questions about competing in the Youth Development League (YDL) please do ask.
Thank you to Beckie and Nicky for standing in as Team Captains for the day and for their match report!
