Watford Harriers Open Meetings – April 2019

Although we are still only in April, the outdoor track season is already well underway for some Vale of Aylesbury athletes. The ever popular midweek Watford Open Graded Meetings are always a good way for athletes to begin their season with a short trip down the A41 and the ability to clock electronic timings.

Two of these meetings have taken place this month with a lot of promising performances being shown. The first meeting was on 3rd April on a chilly early Spring evening. The club had two sprinters on display in the 100m in the form of brothers Alex and Nicholas Moss. Both managed to claim personal bests (PB) with Alex clocking 11.37secs and Nicholas 11.88secs. The rest of the meeting involved 1500m and 3000m races with the club well represented across both distances. In the 1500m there were PBs for Ethan Perry (4:57.53) and Woody Day (4:58.63) with Samuel Hart picking up a seasons best (SB) (5:39.52) in the same race. The final Vale 1500m entrant was Max Perry picking up a SB time (4:09.85.) In the 3000m it was the turn of the females with both picking up PBs in the same race. Anna Cuthbert took over 20 seconds from her PB to go under 11minutes for the first time (10:41.29) and Millie Carey took a similar amount of time from her best for her first sub 12minute clocking (11:57.41.)

The second meeting took place on 17th April in slightly warmer conditions with relatively little wind (as the wind gauge in the 200m races shows.) The events on show were the 200m, 400m and 800m. Starting with the 200m, the club had three competitors entered. Iona Royce was in the first race of the evening and came away with a respectable 30.20secs (-0.5m/s.) Bronwen Reed opened her outdoor season with 26.36secs (-0.2m/s) and Alex Byrom went in the final 200m race clocking 24.72secs (-0.4m/s.) With no club representatives in the 400m, attention turned to the 800m where no less than 10 club members toed the start line. First up was Lucy Cuthbert who took almost 8seconds off her PB to clock 2:44.12. The next few athletes have clearly taken a liking to these meetings as they returned from the first open meeting. Millie Carey (2:32.57), Ethan Perry (2:21.68), Woody Day (2:23.77) and Anna Cuthbert (2:29.84) clocked PBs with Samuel Hart taking home a SB (2:38.42.) The final four Vale athletes took to the track towards the end of an evening that saw 23 800m races take place! First, Max Nicolle claimed a SB (2:02.42) with Ewan Maxwell taking a fine PB (2:06.87) for his efforts. Max Perry came away with a SB (2:02.12) in his race leaving one final Vale athlete to go. As William Ralston set off on his two laps he was about to experience the joy of a PB but an agonising time to finish on. Going through the bell in around 59 seconds, William was looking for a sub 2minute clocking. However, the time just eluded him as he crossed the line in 2:00.10.

Well done to all of those that competed at the meetings. The next Watford Open Graded Meeting takes place on Wednesday 1st May.
