Three Watford Open Graded Meetings took place over the last month with numerous athletes coming away with personal bests (PB’s) and seasons bests (SB’s.)
The opening meeting of the month was on 1st May. First up were the 100m races with Ffion Mabey claiming a (what was then) PB of 14.97secs. The third race of the evening saw Kira Dale take home a SB time of 14.06secs. The fifth and final 100m race of the night saw two club athletes in action. Korben Fenty clocked 11.77secs and Kira’s sister Tyanna Dale came away with 13.08secs. Three Vale athletes were in action in the following 1500m races. Millie Carey will be pleased with her performance as she took over 8seconds off her PB from two years previous, clocking 5:18.17. Woody Day was next up and clocked 4:53.18. The final Vale athlete of the evening was Max Nicolle who, like Millie, took almost 8seconds from his PB to stop the clock at 4:15.51.
Two weeks later on 15th May it was the turn of the 800m athletes. There were no less than 18 800m races on the night! First up for the Vale was U13 Samuel Hart in race 3. He ran well and came away with a 2:37.83 (SB) clocking. The Vale had representatives in three of the next four races with Millie Carey (race 4) clocking 2:43.85, Anna Cuthbert (race 6) finishing in 2:25.58 and U15 Ethan Perry (race 7) running 2:18.63. Race 14 was the next to feature Vale athletes and it was worth the wait. Ethan’s older brother Max Perry blazed round to take the race win and his first sub 2minute clocking with 1:58.81(!) while U15 Ewan Maxwell also claimed a PB with a time of 2:03.69.
The third and final Open Meeting of the month took place on 29th May. It was a return to 100m races to start the evening. Hannah Whitby was the club’s only representative and she came away with 12.86secs. The 1500m races were next on the track and the Vale was well represented again. Lucy Cuthbert (U13) will be happy with her PB of 5:50.52 from the first race. Millie Carey almost matched her personal best from the beginning of the month with a respectable 5:19.15 clocking. Woody Day managed to get within a few seconds of his PB set just over a week prior on his way to 4:40.08 while Ethan Perry managed a PB of 4:50.28 in the same race. The meeting then moved on to the final event of the night, the 3000m. In the first race Anna Cuthbert managed to take a whopping 20seconds from her PB as she finished in 10:21.34! Not to be upstaged, the final race of the evening saw Max Perry take almost 23seconds from his PB and also saw him smash through the 9minute barrier for the first time in 8:43.88!
