Aylesbury’s Boxing Day tradition kicked into action again this year with over 200 athletes taking to the streets for the annual 5k race. Race conditions this year were excellent for those wishing to run off Christmas Day excesses.
On a cold crisp morning the first race was an 800m around the Market Square for the U13s. The winner was Lewie Bowles in a time of 3:43 and first girl home, for the second year, was Lucy Perkins in 3:47. All competitors received a commemorative Christmas Tree medal.
In the main race of the day Simon Coombes of Leighton Buzzard took 1st prize completing the course in 16:21 followed by Dan Gurton (16:34) and Vale’s Charlie May (17:03) . The first Junior to cross the line was Watford’s Thomas Rayner (U17) in 17:35; congratulations to Conor Richardson (U15), first Vale junior to finish in 19:12. For the ladies, Helena Eastham won 1st prize finishing in 19:35 with Joanne Johnson (20:25) and Hollie Smith (20:34) completing the medals. First Vale lady to finish was Julia Austin with Rosanne Iannone close on her heels. Leonie Glasson was first female junior to finish in 23:20.
The race was the third in the Grand Prix season and age graded bonus points went to Julia and Charlie (5); Sue and Conor (3) and Leonie and Alan (1). Top 3 category finishes bonus points (2) went to Julia, Leonie, Sue, Charlie, Conor, Alan, Max, Tim and Roger. The current leaders of the GP are Alan Roberts and Sharon Maisey with Richard Bazeley and Julia Austin close behind.
