The month of May has been an extremely busy one for our athletes competing up and down the country. Our teams have been competing in the Upper and Lower YDL’s and Southern Athletics League, the county track and field championships took place in Oxford and open meetings and road races have been plentiful. Let’s dive in with three reports from Lucy Cuthbert, followed by results from all of the other events this month.

PEDNOR 5 – 5th May

The 5th of May brought with it the opening round of the club’s summer Grand Prix. This event was the Pednor 5 miles which is a challenging road race run by Chiltern Harriers A.C. On the day, the weather mellowed out and brought with it a chilly wind that dropped the temperature to slightly uncomfortable while standing on the start line. We had a decent turn out from our senior endurance athletes with Sophie Delderfield, Mark Fallaize, Charlotte Steptoe, Sarah Pearse, Daisy Goldhagen and Heather Fallaize.

It was a brilliant run from Sophie who was first Vale athlete back and also the first female back. She was closely followed by Mark who came 22nd overall. It was strong runs from Charlotte who came 66th overall and 10th female, Sarah in 70th and 12th female, Daisy who came in 82nd overall and 14th female and Heather who came 201st overall and 71st female. While we didn’t have a team on the men’s side, our women’s team managed to come in an impressive 2nd place overall. Well done to all Vale athletes and good luck for the rest of the summer Grand Prix.

SILVERSTONE 10K – 6th May

On the 6th of May we had 6 Vale athletes tackle the Silverstone 10k hosted on the Silverstone Grand Prix circuit. It was a fairly overcast evening bringing with it unideal high winds that would cause problems on the flat and open course. Despite this it was a successful evening for the club athletes in attendance with 3 being rewarded with PB’s. It is also important to mention that 3 of the competing athletes had run in the London Marathon only 9 days before.

The first Vale athlete back was Alice Rolfe who finished 163rd overall and 10th female. Grace Rowland was the second athlete back and she finished in 303rd overall and 21st female. Grace was also one of the athletes who had run the London Marathon 9 days before and she still managed to run a PB. The third athlete back was Lucy Cuthbert who finished in 430th and was 38th female back. She was closely followed by Iona Esslemont who finished in 489th overall and 47th female. Both Lucy and Iona managed to finish in the top 10 for their age category as well as both running massive PB’s (Lucy ran an almost 3 minute PB while Iona ran over a 7 minute PB). The final 2 athletes had also previously both run the London Marathon. Alan Robert’s came 536th overall and 482nd male in a brave run on tired legs and Amanda Esslemont finished in a time just over her PB and in 571st overall and 58th female.

Well done to all 6 athletes who competed everyone ran extremely well with results and times to show for this.

UPPER YDL MATCH 2 – May 25th

The 25th of May saw the second edition of the Upper YDL at the Hillingdon athletics centre. The conditions for the day were warm and windy which made for a lovely day of spectating but proved a challenge for many of the athletes. We had another decent turn out from the U17 athletes but had another small turnout from the U20’s with only 4 athletes turning up from the age group.

The results from the event can be found below. Well done to all of the athletes who came and competed for club, thank you to the. Officials who turned up to officiate and to the parent helpers for stepping in when we needed more officials. Finally thank you to Pat for organising the team and travel for the event.
